Position Title:  Materials Planning Manager

Location:  St. Paul

Reports To (title):  VP of Supply Chain Solutions

Department:  Supply Chain

Exempt/Nonexempt Status:  Exempt

Effective Date:  9/2016

Job Description:

The Materials Planning Manager is responsible for ensuring that optimum material planning policies and procedures are developed and consistently applied in support of production efficiencies, customer order fill rates, and working capital / inventory requirements.  The Materials Planning Manager will directly supervise the Material Planners while interfacing with other functional areas and others in Sourcing in support of Corporate and departmental key performance indicators (KPI’s)

 Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Ensure consistent understanding and use of SMRT / SAP planning tools and information

    • Define best practices and institutionalize across all Planners / categories

    • Ensure all Planners know where information comes from, how it comes together, how to use it

  • Problem solve with Planners, Customer Service, Operations, and others in Sourcing

    • Work with Planners to expedite critical materials, etc.

  • Raw material & packaging inventory management

    • Define and manage to optimum inventory levels in support of order fill / DIOH

      • right quantity, right age, right place, right time

      • develop policies and procedures to proactively prevent distressed or aged inventory

      • work across the organization to optimize disposition value of obsolete inventory

  • Ensure that pending supply / demand imbalances are proactively communicated across the organization as appropriate

  • Manage the relationship and information flow between Sourcing, Forecasting, and Production Scheduling in support of optimizing the balance between service levels and working capital

  • Partner with the inventory control teams to ensure standardized inventory policies / procedures are adhered to across the platform while leading and facilitating process improvement initiatives

  • Be a key departmental liaison between Sourcing, Sales, Marketing, Supply Chain (forecasting) to ensure that cross-functional needs are understood and met

  • Coach / mentor / train Planners as needed

  • Proper order quantity determination

    • Ensure all Planners can determine, using data, how much to order in support of fill rates and least total cost

    • Support order fill and DIOH goals

       

  • Proper order timing

    • Ensure all Planners can determine, using data, when to order via accurate lead time establishment & usage

  • Train new Planners as hired

  • Backfill for Planners when on PTO or vacant as needed

  • Ensure planners have proper timing, accuracy, and format of information

  • Be the liaison between Planners and Buyers /Sourcing Managers

  • Perform root cause analysis around disconnects in Supply / Demand imbalances and put both short and long term fixes in place

 Skills, Experience and Education:

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities (List all required):

  • Strong working knowledge of planning, production & inventory management, and procurement

  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment

  • Customer-centric, relative to both internal and external customers

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Effective problem solving abilities, supported by root cause analysis ability

  • High analytical ability with strong process orientation

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree Required – Type: Business, Supply Chain, Procurement, Operations

Certification/Licensure Preferred for Job:  CPIM or other APICS certification preferred.  ISM procurement-related certification also desired.

Minimum Experience Preferred (Number of years and type):

3+ years direct experience planning materials and supervising material planners in a fast paced, manufacturing environment.  Familiarity with Sales & Operations Planning, Forecasting, and Procurement a plus.  Experience in CPG preferred.
